The EC4MACS Interim Assessment
In 2010, the EC4MACS project produced a comprehensive assessment of the likely development of future air quality and greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. For the first time, this assessment brought together expert knowledge in the fields of energy, transport, agriculture, forestry, land use, atmospheric dispersion, health and vegeation impacts and developed a coherent outlook into the future options to reduce atmospheric pollution in Europe.
Key findings
- Despite significant reductions in precursor emissions in the past, serious threats remain for climate change, human health, vegetation and ecosystems.
- Based on the most recent economic projections emissions are expected to decline due to stringent policies.
- But these declines in emissions will not be sufficient to achieve sustainable environmental conditions in Europe.
- Further cost-effective measures are available to improve air quality in Europe, and the benefits of these measures would outweigh their costs.
